ICAO Audit Affirms Aviation Safety in Sri Lanka

The audit conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on Sri Lanka’s aviation safety attests to the robust measures implemented to ensure utmost security in Sri Lanka’s aviation services. “Consequently, Sri Lanka’s aviation industry, along with its airspace, continues to uphold a high standard of safety and security,” the audit affirms.

This information was revealed during a recent special meeting convened to assess the advancements made in this international audit. The meeting was initiated by Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

The international audit, which took place from 8 to 19 May, featured the participation of four proficient international aviation safety auditors appointed by the ICAO.

A comprehensive audit was conducted by the Sri Lankan Civil Aviation Authority, the prime national aviation regulatory agency in the lead, and in collaboration with the State Defence Ministry, State Intelligence Unit, domestic and international airlines operating flights to and from the country, and other relevant stakeholders. The purpose of this audit was to assess and evaluate the initiatives and protocols implemented by these entities to ensure and uphold Sri Lanka’s aviation safety in accordance with internationally recognised standards.

According to the Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority, achieving success in these audits will enable Sri Lanka to maintain its position among the top-ranked countries known for upholding aviation safety at an exceptionally high level. Furthermore, this accomplishment will serve as an encouragement for more foreign airlines to operate flights to Sri Lanka and make use of its airspace.

A number of top level officials including Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, Civil Aviation Authority Chairman G.S. Withanage, Civil Aviation Director General and CEO of Civil Aviation Authority P.A. Jayakantha, and several international auditors also attended the event.

Expressing views at the occasion the Minister de Silva said: “The audit carried out by the International Civil Aviation Organization on Sri Lanka’s aviation safety is an immensely significant program for our country. It comprehensively assesses the safety of our aviation sector and its services, determining our international ranking based on the evaluation. The Audit process spans over a period of 10 days, during which our aviation services achieved improved scores compared to the previous assessment. While acknowledging our progress, the audit report also highlights areas that require further attention and rectification. We will diligently adhere to the guidelines provided in the report and take appropriate measures to further enhance the quality and safety of Sri Lanka’s air services.”
