On Board Vessel Training for 50 Seafarers

Steps have been taken to provide training at the port for the first time to 50 seafarers who have acquired Continuous Discharge Certificates (CDC).

Following a four-month training program conducted by the Mahapola Ports and Maritime Academy (MPMA) of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) on Deck Rating and six related short-term courses for seafarers holding CDC, they have commenced practical training aboard maritime vessels at the port on 28 February. The training will take place on four tug vessels and two dredgers operated by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) at the Port of Colombo and is expected to span about two months.

Upon completion of this training, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation is set to issue the seafarers with the Watch Keeping Certificate. This practical training will equip the seafarers with the necessary qualifications to seek employment aboard foreign vessels, as stated by the Merchant Shipping Secretariat.

Certificates were awarded to the successful trainees by the Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva, at the SLPA’s Mahapola Ports and Maritime Academy (MPMA). Secretary to the Ministry K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, SLPA Chairman Keith D. Bernard, SLPA Vice Chairman Gayan Algewattege and several officials were present at the occasion.

Immediately after receiving their certificates, the seafarers commenced practical training aboard vessels.

Following the certificate award ceremony, the Minister de Silva highlighted the significant employment opportunities available for trained seafarers in foreign countries due to the larger fleets owned by shipping companies abroad. He noted that the Ceylon Shipping Corporation owns only two vessels and emphasised the launch of a special program to increase this fleet by registering more vessels under the flag of Sri Lanka. He expressed his intention to seek special cabinet approval for this endeavor.

“I extend my best wishes for the successful completion of the training program initiated today and hope for increased employment opportunities in the maritime sector through the acquisition of new knowledge from this course,” the Minister said.
